Lichgates

Lichgates - S.M. Boyce Lichgates is the first book in The Grimoire Trilogy, soon to be followed by #2 Treason and #3 Heritage.

Set in the imaginary world of Ourea, that can be reached through magical portals called Lichgates. Kara Magari stumbles into the world of Ourea only to find a magical book waiting for her. When the right questions are asked, the Grimoire turns its own pages to answer it. Caught in new world very different creatures inhabiting it and with a different set of rules, Kara is left to learn and cope on her own. Soon she discovers that by acquiring the Grimoire she has sealed her destiny. It is now up to her to reunite the four kingdoms in peace, fulfilling the goal of the first Vagabond who died a thousand years before. But by opening the Grimoire she has managed to attract all the kingdoms’ unwanted attention. The only defense and offense that Kara has at the moment is the Grimoire itself and maybe, Braeden.

This new world of Ourea created by the author is really a fantastic place. The author’s description of the smallest detail has helped create a world that as a reader I found enthralling. Concepts of the four kingdoms being so different from each other, their locations all added to the vivid image of Ourea. The magical, shape-shifting creatures that inhabit Ourea seem to be a natural part of this world yet adds a certain amount of excitement. The characters are well developed and I absolutely loved Kara for coping so well. She isn’t mopey-cribbing sort; instead she accepts and moves on. She takes charge of the fate she is handed and makes the best out of it. Braeden is a perfect match for her. There is a kinship, trust, feelings and a lot of complication there. Will anything come out of it? We will have to wait & read…

Over all, this book has a great setting, a great plot, great characters and rounded up by unpredictable twists. Loved it and looking forward to Treason with great anticipation.
